The problem
While global tobacco use declined from 27 percent in 2000 to 20 percent in 2016, more action is needed to prevent tobacco-related deaths. In 2017, more than 8 million people died from tobacco-related illnesses. New tobacco-related products, such as e-cigarettes, present new ways to become addicted. Corporations play a central role in reducing tobacco use, most clearly through the manufacturing, marketing and selling of tobacco products. Companies not directly involved in the tobacco industry can play a role through the health benefits they provide employees (including programs to help quit smoking) and links with the tobacco industry (such as retail sales or distribution)
